iPad 2: Retina display or no? Sources disagree

Don't get them started on the resolution

With Apple currently working on its second generation iPad, there's one thing that you can count on: right up until launch day, rumour and speculation will be flying around like a flock of carrier pigeons... on Red Bull.

We've already been subjected to camera rumours, release date tittle tattle, and screen resolution gossip. However, it is the latter that has come under more scrutiny in the last 24 hours, with different "trusted" sources coming out with alternative points of view.

For his blog Daring Fireball, Apple commentator John Gruber?has talked to his sources about the possibility of the iPad 2 sporting a super high-resolution (2048 x 1536) Retina display, and has been told that it is unlikely that there will be such a leap in screen technology: "I asked around, and according to my sources, it?is?too good to be true: the iPad 2 does?not?have a retina display", says Gruber. "I believe the iPad 2’s display will remain at 1024 ? 768. Its display may be improved in other ways — brighter, better power consumption, thinner, perhaps."

He believes that RAM would need to be more than doubled to drive a higher resolution screen, something that's unlikely to happen due to cost restrictions. After all, do we want to be paying even more for the iPad 2 than the original iPad? Most complain that the current model is too expensive as it is.

Engadget editor Josh Topolsky disagrees, and stands by the speculation garnered from his own sources: "From what we’ve been told, the thinner, sleeker tablet will sport a new screen technology that is akin to (though not the same as) the iPhone 4’s Retina Display and will be “super high resolution” (unlike reports to the contrary)" he says. "The device will remain at 10-inches but will now feature both front and rear cameras (not a huge surprise), and… there’s an SD slot".

He has also reacted to John Gruber's comments via Twitter: "I think the key here is that you’re saying it’s 2x or nothing, but we’re not making the same claim".

So who's right, Gruber or Engadget? There's only one way to find out.... Fight!
