A Thank You List For Entrepreneurs

I'm not really your mother, though it's a role I play far too well. But, if I were, I'd hand you a drink and a slice of pie and go through all the things you are thankful for, even though you don't sleep, your company is running out of money, your competition is mounting and your spouse is increasingly frustrated with you. But, I don't know where you are this morning, and I'm waiting for my candied bacon to finish candy-ing, so I'll share my thoughts with you, and you can borrow them.

Thank You TO Entrepreneurs for:
  • Innovating against all odds. Sure,  your goods and services make our world easier, but it's your spirit that brightens the world. In dark times, we need people who believe anything is possible, and no one does that like entrepreneurs.
  • Creating job and economic growth even as our biggest companies were shutting down. Historically, 70% of job growth is from small businesses like yours. Thank you, we need that.
  • Being the kind of people who will cure cancer, end our dependence on fossil fuels, and provide a steady stream of silly cats to make us laugh when life sucks.
Thank You FROM Entrepreneurs for:
  • Believing in our visions, at least enough to not stop us, even if you think we're crazy.
  • Buying our drinks when we're too broke to do it ourselves.
  • Investing in our companies and our dreams.
  • Being our friends, spouses, lovers, advisors, & family. We know we're not easy to love, we really do. We know we're arrogant, delusional, stubborn and not the safest post to hitch your horse to. But We'll make the world magical, if you'll keep making it warm, stable and welcoming.
Eat well, you starteruppers and fledgling tycoons. There is much to be thankful for. Share, share alike - and CREATE!

(what are you thankful for?)

VIDEO: Custom-built Star Trek computer controls shopping and entertainment

Both a bit sad and utterly brilliant at the same time
VIDEO: Custom-built Star Trek computer controls shopping and entertainment. Laptops, Tablets, PCs, Star Trek, 0

Hand-built by YouTube user?klapstoelpiloot, this touchscreen PC is?inspired by the LCARS interface from Star Trek, and controls a host of different functions, from grocery shopping to media streaming.

Both the computer and the software is handmade, and the creator is hoping to add extra features at a later date, including, perhaps, automated lighting systems.

However, for now, he can use the system to run his agenda/calendar, check out train times (directly - not through a browser), and surf the 'net - all of which are shown in the clip. Plus, his creation has Bluetooth support to send MP3s and the shopping list to a mobile device, and a Torrent downloading client.

Now all he needs is a humanoid robot with skin like the ginger one from Girl's Aloud (or, just the ginger one from Girl's Aloud) and he's laughing.

Google Doodle Thanksgiving meal set on the table

Google has been cooking its Thanksgiving Doodle up all week, and now it looks as if it's ready to eat.

Big Uncle Goog stated the process on Tuesday when it bought in the supplies.

On Wednesday, it showed us that the Thanksgiving Pie was being prepared.

And now (shown in the main picture above), just in time for the Lions vs. Patriots match, the meal is complete.

All of the Doodles have contained click throughs to six Thanksgiving recipes from the Food Network's Ina Garten. Lovely stuff.

Pocket-lint would like to wish all of our American readers a Happy Thanksgiving.

Gran Turismo 5 tournament marks GT5 launch

Aims to find best GT5 driver
Gran Turismo 5 tournament marks GT5 launch. Gaming, Gran Turismo 5, Driving games, 0

After much anticipation, and delays, Gran Turismo 5 is now available in shops, bringing with it a vast array of cars and a racing simulation experience previously unheard of on any console - in no small part ot its 3D gameplay.

And to coincide with the launch of the game, Sony has decided to stage the Sony BRAVIA Gran Turismo 5 3D gaming tournament, which will see a raft of Sony BRAVIA 3DTVs being installed in HMV stores around the UK to facilitate a nationwide 3D gaming tournament.

Gamers will then battle it out to be crowned the UK’s ultimate 3D GT5 champion.

Although the release date for Sony Computer Entertainment’s Gran Turismo 5 is the 24 November, the event will start on Saturday 27 November in HMV stores, and run for 10 days. Meaning you'll have a valuable couple of days to get back into the GT groove before the competition.

The fastest two players from each region will win a place in the grand final, which will take place at HMV Oxford Circus, London, on 15 December.

As an aside, if you're feeling particularly flush, Sony centres are currently doing a deal for a copy GT5, a PS3, 2 pairs of 3D glasses and a 3D transmitter completely free, when buying any Sony 3DTV from 24 November to 5 December.

Vodafone ups its data roaming game

Revised plans in time for your Christmas break
Vodafone ups its data roaming game

Vodafone has announced a couple of changes to its EU mobile roaming plans, making it cheaper for you to check your email and tweet away whilst you're on the Continent.

The Vodafone Day Traveller plan means that you'll get 25MB per day of data allowance. And whilst that means you still won't be able to stream HD videos, or hook up your Spotify app when you're visiting the Louvre, you will be able to read and reply to around 250 emails, access Facebook, watch around 25 minutes of SD YouTube or access 65 different maps.

The Day Traveller costs ?2 a day, or you can sign up for ?10 a month.

If you're already a Vodafone customer on ?40 a month, and peeved that you only get 5MB of data roaming with your deal then calm down, because your allowance will automatically rise to 25MB.

The revamped plans go live on 1 December.

Virgin Media TiVo first UI pictures

Virgin Media has released the first official TiVo screenshots, showing off the slick looking graphical interface of the new system.

As you can see, the traditional Virgin Media colours are still on board, but it doesn't look a whole lot different to the TiVo system in the States.

As you'd expect there are series link options, as well as details for all the shows on the EPG and there's also an interesting App & Games area.

We know that Virgin Media's TiVo powred HD/3D box will have 1TB of space and will be capable of storing up to 500 hours of content.

A 2010 launch is planned so, although we don't have any official dates yet, it won't be long as there are only 5 weeks left of the year.

We'll keep you posted.

APP OF THE DAY - Roulette Cricket (Android, iPhone, iPad)

Does it play with a straight bat?
APP OF THE DAY - Roulette Cricket (Android, iPhone, iPad). Mobile phone apps, gaming, Gambling, Cricket, Ashes cricket 2010, App of the day, 0

Come 25 November 2010, all cricket fans' eyes will be on Brisbane for the first test match in the Ashes series. The sound of leather upon willow, will echo through the city as England look to retain what is rightfully theirs.

And so, it is down to Pocket-lint to provide an app, which although won't be to everyone's taste and most definitely needs to be used responsibly, may for some enhance the Ashes experience.

So with out further ado - other than to provide links to Wikipedia for our US readers, here's one explaining cricket and one about The Ashes - read on for our featured app which is...

Roulette Cricket HD

Format
Android/iPad/iPhone/
Price
Free
Where
iTunes/Android Market

If you like betting on stuff, in this case cricket, and specifically?when the next boundary is going to be hit, then this is the app for you. Aimed to be used whilst watching the game on your TV (and using Roulette Cricket as your second screen), or if you're lucky enough watching live at the ground, the app enables you to place bets on when the next 4 or 6 will be scored, and that's about it.

Well, not entirely. In actual fact the app also allows for ball by ball coverage updates and also features full score card stats.

However, it's not just the Ashes which the app covers, as it brings in all the games being played around the world including test matches, ODI's and Twenty20. Best of all, however, is that you don't have to lay down any hard cash if you don't want to, as there is a neat "play for fun" option as well.

Everything runs pretty well, and it's all very straightforward to get to grips with.

And there's some more news regarding the Android version of this app, as it is now available on the Vodafone Shop - meaning the game can be played across all Android-powered handsets on the network, adding another platform that already includes the iPhone and online.

IE 9 Platform Preview 7: Making Your Web-Sites Faster

On October 28th, we released Internet Explorer Platform Preview 6. Today, we are announcing Internet Explorer Platform Preview 7 which is focused on real-world performance improvements across sites on the web. We first demonstrated the power of a fully hardware accelerated HTML 5 browser taking advantage of the full power of the hardware through Windows just 8 months ago. We now couple that with dramatic performance gains in Chakra, Microsoft?s JavaScript engine. As a side effect of our focus on real-world performance, Internet Explorer 9 performance in JavaScript micro-benchmarks has also improved and Internet Explorer is now the leading performing browser in WebKit SunSpider. Since we first demonstrated Chakra at PDC in 2009, Internet Explorer has increased JavaScript performance by 345% according to WebKit SunSpider.

Equally important, we continue to see broad developer excitement and rapid user adoption of Internet Explorer Beta. Since the beta launch, we have already had over 13 million downloads of Internet Explorer 9 beta and it continues to be our fastest adopted browser to date.

PERFORMANCE GAINS IN PLATFORM PREVIEW 7

Our recent blog series on performance talked about the approach we have taken to performance. With IE9 our focus has been on real-world performance and giving the browser access to the full power of the PC. The video below has more information on what it means to focus on real-world performance.

One of the browser subsystems that drives performance is the JavaScript engine. We have seen continuous gains in real-world performance since we first announced Chakra, Microsoft?s new JavaScript engine. Chakra delivers new innovations in how JavaScript is handled with performance gains of as much as 100x on some coding patterns. Dean talks more about the work we?ve done on the IE engineering blog. The video below shows how these performance improvements translate into new types of experiences that can be delivered:

REAL WORLD SITE PERFORMANCE vs. MICRO-BENCHMARKS

As a side effect of the real-world performance improvements in Internet Explorer 9, we also see improvements in micro-benchmarks. One of the most commonly cited micro-benchmarks for JavaScript is WebKit SunSpider. Since Chakra was first announces at PDC 09, IE has improved JavaScript performance on this test by 345%. With Platform Preview 7, IE9 is the fastest browser according to WebKit SunSpider.

Benchmark

However, measuring the performance of a browser by looking at small parts of individual subsystem is inherently flawed because it?s not how actual sites work and it doesn?t reflect how subsystems perform together. Instead you will find demos on the Internet Explorer Test Drive like Galactic, HTML5 Sudoku and Shakespeare?s Tag Cloud to be better benchmarks as they represent real coding patterns and engage multiple subsystems at once. The performance difference in these demos is striking and shows what it means to optimize for end-to-end performance rather than a single subsystem.

INTERNET EXPLORER 9 MOMENTUM CONTINUES TO BUILD

The momentum around Internet Explorer 9 continues to build. Since the beta launch, we have already had over 13 million downloads of Internet Explorer 9 beta and it continues to be our fastest adopted browser to date. Download IE9 Beta today and see first-hand what a browser built for real-world performance can enable.

For developers, IE9 now couples industry-leading JavaScript performance with industry-leading innovation in full hardware acceleration. The performance gains combined with HTML5 support and pinned sites provides new opportunities to reimagine web experiences. If you haven?t already, visit the Internet Explorer Test Drive, download Internet Explorer Platform Preview 7 and get your sites ready for Internet Explorer 9.

Stay tuned for more information on the Exploring IE blog about meeting the Chakra team who are excited to field your questions about JavaScript, performance and Internet Explorer 9. UPDATE: see here for details on the Twitter Live Chat.

Pirate Bay founders lose court appeal

And now face jail time
Pirate Bay founders lose court appeal

The Pirate Bay co-founders have lost their appeal against a 2009 ruling that they were illegally sharing copyrighted content.

The decision by a Swedish court means that the co-founders now face time behind bars.

Fredrik Neij faces 10 months in prison, Peter Sunde has been sentenced to 8 months and Carl Lundstrom 4. The final member of the group, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, was too ill to attend court and will be sentenced at a later date.

The men also face a hefty fine of 46 million Swedish Crowns (about ?4.1 million).

Lawyers for music labels and movie studios accused The Pirate Bay's co-founders of helping people circumvent copyright controls.

The founders defended themselves, and stated that The Pirate Bay did not host any pirated material directly.

Where this leaves The Pirate Bay now is unclear - the site is still functioning at present.

The Hobbit To Be Shot on Thirty RED Epic Cameras

I like to cover RED stuff here at CrunchGear, because I just like the idea of complacent industries getting kicked the pants by a newcomer. There have been innumerable delays and price hikes, but the RED line of professional digital cameras has impressed some of the big names in cinema from the start — perhaps most famously Peter Jackson, whose "Crossing The Line" short demonstrated the capability of the early models. He's come back for more now, and will be shooting The Hobbit on no less than thirty of the latest RED Epic cameras.
