ZTE to sell Android phones direct to UK

SIM free through Brightpoint

ZTE is setting its sights on increasing UK penetration, signing a deal with Brightpoint for distribution of the affordable handsets directly in the UK.

ZTE might not be a name that you recognise. The Chinese company is behind 2010’s popular Orange San Francisco handset, which they call the ZTE Blade, and this year’s main handset is the ZTE Skate, a handset that we first saw at Mobile World Congress in February and which has subsequently been announced as the Orange Monte Carlo.

Ultimately the announcement means you’ll be able to get your hands on a ZTE phone in the UK, SIM free, with relative ease.

“We expect ZTE to become a household name synonymous with high quality smartphones and tablets”, said Wu Sa, director of mobile device operations, ZTE UK.

The move bears some resemblance to the moves made by HTC, who also appointed Brightpoint back in 2006. There are some parallels, with ZTE behind several white label devices, looking to grab their own slice of the market under their own name.

ZTE’s challenge lies not only in distribution, but in perception and awareness. Whilst HTC now enjoys global recognition as a brand, ZTE is much lesser known and doesn’t have anything like the same portfolio depth. The current run of Android devices are pushed as “affordable”, but that won’t necessarily mean rapid adoption.

Many of those looking to buy SIM free might be after a premium device with a high resell value and those seeking an affordable smartphone might find that they don’t have the cash to buy the handset up front.

Of course, much depends on the performance of the ZTE Skate and the price that customers will ultimately have to pay for it. We suspect that ZTE will have to push out higher-spec devices to pull in the SIM-free buying public. That said, existing ZTE devices have been popular with the modding crowd and a direct sales channel might see customers moving away from the networks' branded devices and direct to ZTE.

ZTE told us the Skate should be arriving in Q4 of this year, so not long to wait.

Hasbro banks on Monopoly for Christmas number one

Old favourite rejigged in several ways

Toy manufacturer Hasbro has crafted three new versions of Monopoly for 2011, and while they stick to the same basic rules, each has a unique selling point that will appease different kinds of people.

First up is a new Electronic Banking version of the original game, borrowing the chip and pin calculator from last year's Monopoly Revolution anniversary edition. This time, however, the electronic bank is square (rather than round) and ditches the song clips that played with certain actions. The community chest and chance cards are back to the paper kind too.

The board is the usual Monopoly square, but the major difference with this set is that all of the place names have been updated to more relevant ones. For example, Euston Road has been changed to Camden High Street and Pentonville Road is now Earl's Court Road.

In addition, the hotels are now high-rise blocks, to match more modern themes.

The other two sets are for kids and collectors respectively. The kiddie one is a license edition released to tie in with Pixar's Cars 2. It's simplified for younger players to understand (monetary units are more basic) and as well as each of the properties being replaced with characters from the movie, Pocket-lint is most impressed with the replacement for traditional dice-rolling.

Instead of flinging a die or two across the board, Lightening McQueen is physically whizzed around a circular track that frames the board. It's a great way to promote interaction for very young kids. Other cars from the movies make up the place markers, and the whole thing is fun and slick.

The other set is more traditional, but completely themed around the London Olympics 2012. Character pieces include mascots Wenlock and Mandeville, the hotels are in the shape of the Olympic Stadium, and the locations are different venues for all of the sporting events.

There are also points of interest on the board, such as the ticketing office and merchandising booth. Other than that, it follows the standard rules of Monopoly.

Prices for each of the sets range from ?26.99 for the Electronic Banking version up to ?35 for the London Olympics 2012 edition (the Cars 2 set is around ?30).

There's one set missing, though. Surely there should've been a News of the World commemorative edition? Go straight to jail, do not pass "Go", do not buy BSkyB....

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide Confirmed For July 27 Launch, July 19 Pre-Order

After some confusion, T-Mobile has taken to Facebook to give us an exact arrival date for the myTouch 4G Slide. We originally pegged the slider for a July 27 launch, and as luck (and leaks) would have it, we were right. T-Mo?s Facebook update also confirmed that July 19 will kick off the pre-order period (web only).

Windows Intune 2.0 beta Now Available

You can go to Windows Intune Springboard site for information on signing up for your beta subscription. Once you have completed the sign-up process and activated your account, you can go to https://beta.manage.microsoft.com to begin evaluating the beta. A beta subscription will allow you to deploy to up to 10 PCs, which should allow you to evaluate the improvements we?ve made.

Here are the highlights of what?s new:

Software Distribution

• Package applications, upload them to the cloud for distribution, and deploy them to your Windows Intune-managed PCs. For the beta we have provided 2 gigs of storage for this purpose. Packages can be normal applications in the form of MSIs or EXEs or third party updates. Deploying packages leverages BITS to ensure data transfer is efficient.

Better Hardware Reporting and Filters

• We do a great job of collecting hardware data, but we want to ensure we also present this information in a way that is most useful to you. To assist with this, we have introduced the hardware dashboard along with reports, which will help you view and export your hardware more easily.

Third Party License Management

• Upload and track your 3rd party and Microsoft retail or OEM license agreements - in addition to Microsoft Volume License Agreements ? all in one place.

User Interface Enhancements

• Many new enhancements have been made to the user experience. In general, we made numerous changes to improve navigability. We are also introducing the ability to right-click, which will display a list of context-sensitive actions you can perform. We have also added a new administrator role, so you can now have ?read-only? administrators.

Remote Actions

• Execute a number of tasks on remote unattended PCs. You can invoke malware definitions to install, you can initiate a malware scan to run immediately, and you can remotely reboot a PC.

Improvements to Alerts Workspace

• We?ve introduced the ability to configure thresholds on alerts so you can filter out less important events, and focus on the ones that matter to you. We also improved the way you set up recipients for these alerts.

Support for images

• The Windows Intune client is ?image-friendly? and can be set up prior to image deployment. Previously, the Windows Intune client required an internet connection before it could install.

Paypal shows off NFC-powered money transfers between Nexus S handsets

Don't do it by accident

Paypal's electronic money mastery continues to grow, with the company now entering into the NFC mobile payments field.?

Paypal has designed a system that allows you to instantly transfer money between accounts by simply tapping two different handsets together. The idea relies on the near field communications technology found in Samsung's Nexus S smartphone.

Using a specially designed Android widget, you enter the amount of money you want to send, tap it on the relevant phone until your handset vibrates and then after a pin is entered, the transfer is complete.?

Paypal cited a massive growth in demand for mobile payments as a reason for the systems development. The problem is that until now a lot of NFC systems have been pretty clunky, with few businesses yet to make use of them. A company the size of Paypal properly supporting NFC could mean a major leap forward in the systems adoption.?

As of yet there is no exact release date for the widget, nor are any of the countries that will support it mentioned. A Paypal blog post is pointing to the end of summer for the widget to go live, but sadly that is all we know.?

Update Rollup 4 for Exchange 2010 SP1

Earlier today the Exchange CXP team released Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 to the Download Center.

This update contains a number of customer-reported and internally found issues since the release of RU1. See 'KB 2509910: Description of Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1' for more details. In particular we would like to specifically call out the following fixes which are included in this release:

• 2519359 Unable to Create a 'Reply With' Rule on Public Folders Even With Owner and Send As Permissions
• 2394554 Generating DSN fails if original mail uses non-support encoding charset.
• 2490134 Outlook 2007 does not deliver "Delayed Delivery" Messages against an Exchange 2010 Server in Online mode with any additional Transport loaded in the Outlook Profile

General Notes

Note for Exchange 2010 Customers using the Arabic and Hebrew language version: We introduced two new languages with the release of Service Pack 1, Arabic and Hebrew. At present we are working through the process of modifying our installers to incorporate these two languages. Customers running either of the two language versions affected are advised to download and install the English language version of the rollup which contains all of the same fixes.

Note for Forefront users: For those of you running Forefront Security for Exchange, be sure you perform these important steps from the command line in the Forefront directory before and after this rollup's installation process. Without these steps, Exchange services for Information Store and Transport will not start after you apply this update. Before installing the update, disable ForeFront by using this command: fscutility /disable. After installing the update, re-enable ForeFront by running fscutility /enable
