Microsoft: Tethering should have been in Windows Phone 7 Mango

Exec admits missing feature
Microsoft: Tethering should have been in Windows Phone 7 Mango. Phones, Microsoft, Windows Phone 7, 0

Achim Berg, the corporate vice president of Windows Phone marketing has told Pocket-lint in an informal chat that he has regretted not getting the Windows Phone 7 team to include tethering in the new Mango?update detailed on Tuesday.?

The revelation shows that Microsoft still has plenty to do ahead of the scheduled launch later this year.

“It’s been clear today that people want thethering support,” Berg told Pocket-lint after many journalists complained about a lack of Wi-Fi at the London VIP event at Millbank Tower near Westminster.

Had Windows Phone 7 included tethering support in their operating system situations like the London launch event would be adverted in the future.

But it’s not all regrets, Berg’s favourite bit he tells us is the new Bing local scout feature. Bing local scout is a new feature of Windows Phone 7 (Mango) that works out where you are and will tell you what’s good to do, see, as well as where to grab a bite or a drink, something that Berg says that he’s been using quiet a bit already in the UK and the US.

Berg also said that the company will have a Skype app in time for the Autumn release, however didn't go into any further details.

As for the name, Berg wouldn’t let on as to where the Mango name came from or what the official name of the second installment of Windows Phone 7 will be called.

One thing the Microsoft exec did confirm though, is that it won’t be called Windows Phone 7.1.

We will keep you posted.

Opera Mini 6 hits iOS
Opera provides Safari alternative for iPad and iPhone users. apps, ipad apps, iphone apps, software, Browsers, opera, Opera Mini, 0

Back in March Opera release Opera Mini 6 for J2ME, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian and now its iOS' turn to get in on the fun - with the iPad and iPhone version of Opera Mini 6 landing.

“I would compare it to walking onto the stage and hearing the roar of the crowd,” said Opera’s, CEO Lars Boilesen, when describing the feeling of letting the Opera Mini 6 browser out on stage in the App Store.

“We have put in a lot of rehearsal and clever thought behind the new experience. The Opera Mini browser has always kicked up the tempo when downloading pages; now the browsing flows along to a smooth, easy beat.”

Indeed.

So what exactly are fanboys getting if they download the app? Well, auto adapting for your iDevice's display for a start with optimised pages for iPhone 4s and iPads.

You'll also get faster smoother panning and zooming, share buttons for My Opera, Facebook or Twitter and "jazzed-up" skin and revamped Opera menus.

And if your confused, the difference between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile is that Mini reduces pages down to around a tenth of their size, saving you on data and making surfing quicker, and Opera Mobile is the whole shebang, complete with HTML 5 bells and whistles.

Opera Mini 6 for iOS is free, and is in the App Store now.

A Bit More On WWDC, The Mythical iPhone ?4S?, and iOS 5

With WWDC quickly approaching, the rumor mills are heating up with what we should expect at Apple's annual conference known for big announcements. We've learned a little bit more that speaks to what to expect ? including a couple of big, widely-requested things. First of all, a lot of sites seem to be working themselves into a tizzy about the so-called "iPhone 4S". While it has already been widely reported that there will not be any major hardware announcements at WWDC this year, people seem to be letting their imaginations get the best of them anyway. This site, for example, notes that Apple is pushing for British journalists to fly out for WWDC. And today, there's a report about Australian journalists getting the same message. Both conclude this must be for the "iPhone 4S".

California regulators may scrutinize AT&T/T-Mobile merger

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) hasn't launched a full-blown probe of AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile yet, but it's moving in that direction. On Thursday, following a request by staff for some kind of action on the matter, the CPUC ordered the preparation of a document that could open a merger proceeding. The document will be considered by California on June 9.
