Seattle is pretty enthusiastic about its block parties, so maybe it was natural for Seattle-based WhitePages to introduce a new online tool to organize them.
Called "Neighbors," the free service calls up an aerial view of your neighborhood and shows contact information of your neighbors.
It draws on WhitePages.com contact information, which covers more than 90 percent of adults in the U.S. and draws more than 30 million vists per month.
To organize a block party or call up the block-level directory, you navigate to the website's "address & neighbors" tab and enter an address. Invitations can be created and mailed directly from the site.
WhitePages is working with the National Night Out program, which has scheduled this year's event for Aug. 2, although the system can be used to set up events any time.
To emphasize the importance of neighborliness, the company commissioned a Harris Interactive poll that found more people can identify their neighbors cars than their first names, and more know their neighbors' pets names than the names of their neighbors' kids.
WhitePages also launched a new local directory app for Android devices on Wednesday. Called "Localicious," it uses device location to call up "relevant tips, reviews and trending hot spots" drawn from the Foursquare check-in service and has features for automatically checking into Foursquare when users arrive at a destination.
