For a few days at least
Speedball 2: Evolution, the iPad and iPhone (iPod touch) game that we love so much here at Pocket-lint towers, is now available for free on the App Store. Nada. For nowt.
But you'd better hurry, as it's only available for a limited period. However, although it says that it's just for today (1 June) on iTunes, as today's?@FreeAppADay Store App, we've been reliably informed that it'll be available for a little longer: "Tower Studios’ brilliant touch-screen re-imagining of the classic Amiga sports game cum-brawl-‘em-up, goes totally free from June 1st 2011 for a few days only," says the developer.
The game, which we reviewed back in February, is a superb update to 1990's Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, and is a great future sports bash-a-thon in its own right. It's got an extensive career mode, a new control system that makes great use of the tilt mechanisms associated with iOS devices, and updated graphics.
We also had a chat with Jon Hare from Tower Studios before its release, who suggested that this could be but the first conversion of a Bitmap Brothers classic game for the new generation.
And considering the quality of this debut title, we can't wait. And for free? It's a complete no-brainer.
We thoroughly recommend that you download it from Apple's App Store now.
