Comcast is extending its broadband reach with the announcement of a new 3G/4G mobile hotspot. The Xfinity MiFI lets up to five users connect via WiFi to whatever flavor of mobile broadband is handy. In much of the US, that will be fairly vanilla 3G. Where available, users will be able to take advantage of Clearwire's WiMAX network (Comcast is one of the companies that invested in Clearwire).
The hotspot is a Novatel MiFi 4082 with some Xfinity rebranding. When on a 4G WiMAX network, the Mobile Hotspot is capable of download speeds of up to 6Mbps and uploads of up to 1Mbps. When there's no WiMAX in range, it will fall back to a 3G CDMA network and download speeds closer to 1Mbps.
“This new product gives customers the flexibility to instantly create their own secure hotspot everywhere they go,” said Tom Nagel, senior vice president and general manager of Wireless Services for Comcast. “Consumers want mobile Internet access for Wi-Fi-enabled devices like iPads, laptops and smartphones, and with this offering they can share their connection with family, friends or colleagues and can even watch TV and movies on-the-go.”
Compared to similar devices from Sprint, Verizon, and other wireless broadband providers, the Internet2Go's pricing looks pretty attractive. The device itself costs $25 and the first 12 months of service is $40 per month, after which time it goes up to $55. Sprint, in contrast, charges $60 per month. Like Sprint and Clearwire, Comcast's service allows for unlimited 4G usage, with 3G service limited to 5GB per month.
