Sony has confirmed that an "external intrusion" caused the ongoing PlayStation outage, amid reports that the PSN Admin Dev account has been hacked into.

The downtime, which now enters its sixth day (it's been down since Wednesday last week, and also includes Sony's Qriocity service) doesn't look like ending anytime soon, with Sony admitting via the PlayStation Blog:

"We are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security."

PSU.com quotes a source "with a close connection" to SCEE stating that the PSN sustained a LOIC attack and claiming that Admin Dev accounts have been breached.

The outage is a real kick in the teeth for gamers looking to get their online game on over the long weekend.

Be sure to check back on Pocket-lint for regular updates - we'll be reporting any news that the PSN is back online sooner than you can say, "I might go outside and enjoy the sunshine instead".
