Some of the first gameplay footage of Darkspore, a sci-fi action RPG from Maxis, has begun to trickle out onto gaming sites. While the campaign remains largely a mystery, two videos of monsters going at each other in an arena-style match have been released.
Darkspore is similar in some ways to plain old Spore, Maxis' pretty but disappointingly empty 2008 release. Instead of building communities in a real-time strategy setting, though, the highly customizable monsters are now known as "living weapons" and battle bad guys and each other in a, well, darker place.
In PVP, the living weapons have a small set of abilities they can use against each other. The style of play, attacks, and need to run away every so often and re-approach enemies bears some superficial similarities to League of Legends (the whole "tower defense" thing aside).
The living weapons, also called "heroes," are meant to be widely customizable, with tens of thousands of armor choices. But it seems they will fall into a subset of basic stereotypes, where knowledge and facility with attack combinations is more key to success than choosing a particularly strong character.
It's still too early to say whether Darkspore will overcome the depth-of-play issues that ruined Spore for many that eagerly waited for its release. A beta signup is available on the Darkspore's site, but no dates have been announced yet. Take a look at the gameplay video below—is this something you could get into?
