Microsoft Kinect exceeds sales expectations

Did better than forecast for 2010

Sales of the Kinect motion controller for the Xbox 360 exceeded Microsoft's own forecast for 2010. Market research firm iSuppli is reporting that, of a?shipped 8 million units to retailers worldwide, 6.3 million of them were sold to customers before the end of the year.

Microsoft's forecast was that the accessory would sell 5 million units in 2010, so is naturally happy that it exceeded that figure by a further 1.3 million.

It is also claimed that the Kinect's major rival, the PlayStation Move, sold 5.23 million units, making Microsoft the clear winner in the motion sensor battle at Christmas. And when you consider that the Move came out a month earlier and is available at a lower price point, the Redmond-based company must be very pleased indeed.

It will also be happy that the Xbox 360 has posted a year-on-year sales increase for January (at 381,000 units), the only console to do so.
