BARCELONA, Spain -- Sony Ericsson will make a mobile phone called the Xperia Play that will run PlayStation games, the phone maker said Sunday at Mobile World Congress.
The Xperia Play will run on the Google operating system Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This means Sony PlayStation is going with Android as its mobile gaming marketplace.
Sony Ericsson's investment in mobile gaming comes after Microsoft built deep integration between Xbox Live and Windows Phone 7, when phones based on the latter came out in the fall. Microsoft said Xbox Live apps is one of the most popular categories for apps in its mobile marketplace.
The Sony phone has a slide out game pad with buttons similar to the PlayStation controller -- two shoulder buttons and the four circle, cross, square and triangle icons.
Game maker Electronic Arts is making "Need for Speed," "Sims 3" and "FIFA 10" for the Xperia Play phone.
The phone will be available in March, and I'm tracking down details on when it will be available in the U.S.
Update 5:10 a.m.: The Xperia Play will launch in March on Verizon Wireless in the U.S. Sony Ericsson has not announced pricing yet.
